A young man succumbed to his injuries following a collision with a Toyota Quantam delivery van on Corlett Avenue on Friday afternoon 8 November at around 2.30 pm.

According to what eyewitnesses on the scene described to the Record, the collision occurred after the delivery van tried to turn right into Gregory Street.

The delivery van was said to be in the left lane, heading towards Main Reef Road on Corlett Avenue when the driver decided to turn right. The biker, believed to be in his twenties and travelling in the right lane allegedly speeding, collided with the delivery vehicle. Both the biker and bike were flung into the air.

What followed, they say, “was something tremendously shocking”.

A woman who says she was travelling in front of the delivery vehicle told the Record what she saw through the rearview mirror.

“All I saw was a bike being flung in my direction.

“I immediately made a U-turn on Corlett Avenue to get out of potential danger.”

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson says that paramedics arrived on scene at around 2.45 pm. They immediately assessed the biker who had landed on the embankment on Corlett Avenue, metres away from where the collision occurred.

“They had found that due to the severe nature of the chest and head injuries he had sustained he did not survive and they were unable to do anything more to save his life.

“They had no choice but to declare him dead on the scene.”

The bike ended up in the middle of the road near the intersection of Corlett Avenue and Van Der Linde Street.

“There was evidence to suggest that the young man’s body had collided with trees on the embankment, impacting his already severe injuries.”

By the time the Record left the scene at 15.15 pm, the JMPD had not arrived yet. Both Joburg EMS and Netcare 911 were on scene, offering assistance as members of the Roodepoort Community Policing Forum (CPF) redirected traffic.

The two men who were travelling in the delivery van sustained no serious injuries but were visibly shaken by what had taken place, says Jackson.

“They were assessed and later could leave the scene privately.”

According to Jackson, the young man’s family later arrived on the scene and were grief-stricken by what had happened. She said that the police also arrived on scene at a later stage.

“They will conduct all necessary investigations as to what exactly had taken place leading to this tragic, fatal collision.”
