Fun education at the Roodepoort Museum
The Roodepoort Museum is more than just dust and paraphernalia, it's a learning experience.
A recent visit to the Roodepoort Museum showed that even toddlers enjoy learning about history, Carolina Geldenhuys told the Record.
Barbara’s Playgroup visited the museum with playgroup manager Mrs Gell late in October. Geldenhuys explained that a visit to the museum forms part of the playgroup’s annual events calendar.
“Mrs Gell is a long-standing friend and supporter of the Roodepoort Museum.
“The children always dress up in traditional costume, ensuring a colourful and fun-filled day for everyone.
“Actually it is difficult to tell who has the most fun, the museum staff or the children!”
According to Carolina studies have proved that regular museum visits can influence a child’s academic achievement positively. By that research, the Roodepoort Museum’s list of educational programmes are an obstensible alternative to textbook learning. One of the educational programmes at the Museum especially caters for pre-primary school children while the most popular programme is aimed at Grade 3 pupils. These programmes mostly focuse on local history, but can be tailored to suit individual needs, abilities and interests, Caroline told the Record.
“A guide always accompanies visitors through the museum.
“Groups of pupils get divided into smaller groups of up to ten per group who then tour the museum.
“Up to 100 pupils can be accommodated every day.”
The Roodepoort Museum is situated in the Civic Centre at 100 Christiaan de Wet Road in Florida Park. Entrance to the museum is right next to the Roodepoort (previously Pro Musica) Theatre. The museum is open by appointment only and thus booking is essential. Contact the Museum at 011 761 0226 for more information or to make a booking.
