Baptist Church launches I love Florida campaign
A 75-year-old church now boasts the 'I love Florida' campaign.
It seems like just the other day when the Florida Baptist Church started as a branch of the Roodepoort Baptist Church.
However, it actually happened in 1938, and the church has been growing ever since. On Sunday 13 October the church celebrated its 75th anniversary acknowledging all the pastors who contributed to or rather served the church for many years, with Reverend Hendricks and Reverend Methven-Gordon being among them.
Although the church has faced a number of challenges over the years, Trent Eayrs who is the current pastor along with the members of the church are very focused on expanding the church. The members have started an ‘I Love Florida’ campaign to help the less privileged. The campaign aims at giving back to the community. Church members are adamant to collect food for the homeless as well as cleaning up the surrounding areas. Some of the members often visit Florida Primary School to listen to and help to enhance the pupils’ reading skills.
“Some even have taken young, disadvantaged children under their wings and have been flying kites with the boys and painting nails with the girls,” says Cynthia McCarthy, a member of the church.
The church has planted food gardens at the Rand Leases squatter camp to help feed the needy, and it has fed dozens of families.
From Wednesday 11 to Sunday 15 December the church will host its annual Nativity Festival for the members of the local community. Residents can walk through the Nativity scenes while enjoying refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend. Contact the church offices at 011 472 1007 or 011 472 1008 for more information.
