The Debaters, Rumours Lounge regulars
Learn about a local music group that has 'live rehearsals' at Rumours regularly.

The Record met some very special Monday regulars at the Rumours Lounge in Weltevreden Park for a quick interview.
The Debaters, a group of local talented musicians, has what they call ‘live rehearsals’ at the Rumours Lounge every first and last Monday night of the month, “and it has become a thing now”.
The Debaters was started mid 2009 by Mark Trump and the late Matthew Maher who was the owner of Matt’s Music. The band started out as a cover band and comprises members from other bands. All the members reside on the West Rand. Drummer Mark Trump stays in Rangeview, guitarist Norden Hartman in Allen’s Nek and bass player Christ Joubert in Weltevreden Park while singer Candace Barnwell lives in Rosettenville.
“Our approach was to perform more recent radio hit songs as opposed to the standard of 70s and 80s that everyone else seems to be doing.
“We try to be different and offer a unique product that is all about entertainment and having a good time,” Mark told the Record.
“We are very grateful for the support we receive from Fred [Otto] at Rumours Lounge.
“I never have met a venue owner so dedicated to helping out and supporting the local music scene so passionately.”
The Debaters told the Record that their perfect fan would be someone who enjoys a variety of feel-good and party rock songs, “generally, just good music”.
The band is persistent that entrance to their “Monday night madness” at Rumours remain free of charge.
