Business owner duplicates plates, racks up R22 700 in fines

R22 700 in fines, six court summons and zero official investigations.

On further investigation the Record found that Hildegarde Janse van Rensburg (59) actually received a total of 27 fines amounting to R22 700.

Previously only nine fines (Nine fines for innocent motorist (59), Roodepoort Record, 25 October) were made available to the Record concerning a case where duplicate registration plates are causing havoc for an innocent Fourways resident.

Along with the 27 fines, six court summons reached Janse van Rensburg who had given up all hope to resolve the issue with the JMPD and their Number Plate Investigation Unit.

“They’re just not coming back to me,” was her hopeless remark.

Janse van Rensburg was forced to drive to the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court six times in order to exonerate herself from the fines wrongfully issued to her. The offender, as she refers to the other motorist, drives a silver Toyota Hilux bakkie with her old registration number ZCJ 767 GP. She since has deregistered and reregistered her white BMW sedan to avoid receiving more incorrect fines.

From the fines mentioned, the Record noticed that the offender exceeded the speed limit in five main areas, Honey Hills, Allen’s Nek, Braam Fischerville, Constantia Kloof and Reefhaven. Of the fines 45 per cent was issued in Honey Hills, 15 per cent in Allen’s Nek, and seven per cent in Bram Fischerville, Constantia Kloof and Reefhaven respectively. Fines also were issued for offences in Klipspruit, Mofolo (Soweto), Wilro Park, Horison and Randburg.

Allegedly the bakkie is registered to a business in Dobsonville and the Record confirmed with an employee that the alleged offender is an owner of the family business.

Despite numerous efforts the alleged offender could not be reached for comment yet.

The Roodepoort Police confirmed that a fraud case had been opened at their station on 27 March this year. However, spokesperson Colonel Chris Wilken says that the case has been moved to the Florida and Honeydew Police Stations as it does not fall within the Roodepoort SAPS’ jurisdiction.

“The case has been closed at the Roodepoort Police Station.”
