Weltevreden Park-based Palm Court Karate Centre recently celebrated its 20th year and on 9 September the centre held a tournament to celebrate this milestone. The celebrations were held at Wits University in Braamfontein and more than 300 contestants took part in fighting and kata.
The centre was established in 1993 by Sensei Mario Sequeira and is currently ranked as one of the top karate dojos (training centres) in Gauteng.
In its 20-year history it has produced a number of South African champions and holders of National Protea Colours and several students from the centre have represented South Africa on the world stage. Two hundred quality black belt holders have been produced and more than 10 internationally-qualified instructors came out of Palm Court.
Sequeira said “The dojo prides itself on its traditional roots and although the accolades have always been welcome, our only goal is to teach authentic karate, and in doing so produce outstanding future leaders”.
