Vacant house a security risk

Allens Nek resident fears vacant house may become a haven for criminals and vagrants

Allens Nek resident Alcina Birk is concerned about a vacant house adjacent to her own, and fears it will become a nest for criminals. According to Birk, the house has been unoccupied since the beginning of the year. “While the house still had occupants, it looked like a business was running from this house because normally you would see lights on at night.”

On Saturday 12 October, the vacant house was burgled. “I noticed that the front gate was slightly ajar, and the front door to the house left open. This was strange because all along the house and gates were locked.”

She immediately contacted Honeydew police who responded quickly.

“Police arrived expecting to find armed burglars inside, only to find nobody there, nothing in the house, but cupboard doors and fittings were vandalised.”

This only added to her escalating fears, and she further suggests the house may attract vagrants.

Ward 97 councillor Jaco Engelbrecht has contacted City Council in order to identify the house’s owner and inform him of the situation.
