The Riverwel Residents Association recently held their annual general meeting where elected committee members were announced.
Most of the committee was unanimously re-elected with an additional three new members voted in. Kevin Thomson was re-elected as chairman, and Wendy Acton, Peter Redfearn, Peter Critcher, Chris Huckle, Lau and Deone Zuydervelt, Sharon Laloo and Neville Burnett were elected to represent the committee.
The meeting was addressed by Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin, who gave a short speech on service delivery. CSS Community Support Services CEO Greg Pearce presented residents with a crime overview of the past year, while SAPS Sector 2 Manager Sgt Makhura stressed the importance of domestic watch meetings. Sgt Makhura also discussed the prevalent crimes in the area:
• household robberies and burglaries
• theft and hi-jacking of motor vehicles
• theft out of motor vehicles
“Educate your domestics regarding strangers trying to gain access to properties using false information,” said Sgt Makhura. “Always keep doors locked on wash days or when working outside the residence.” He encouraged reisdents to regularly check that alarm systems are working properly and to be diligent about switching them on when going to bed.
“Please don’t leave vehicles parked on the pavement or in the street, and when entering your property, check to see that no strangers are lurking around,” he concluded.
