Crash barrier repaired
Pedestrians no longer forced to walk on street, ten months later
The crash barrier on Without Street in Weltevreden Park has finally been repaired. The barrier was damaged by a motor vehicle accident that occurred in November 2012.
For nine months the damaged barrier had been posing a safety risk to pedestrians as it was blocking the pavement, and pedestrians had no choice but to use the road, dodging vehicles.
Sector 2 CPF chairperson Neville Burnett said he had on numerous occasions logged the query with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), but all came to nought.
In the Northsider week ending 9 August, Without pedestrians face danger, JRA spokesperson Sam Modiba said they were investigating the matter. Two months later the barrier had still not been repaired.
On 7 October the Northsider contacted the JRA to ascertain how far they were in investigating the matter. In his response JRA spokesperson Modiba said, “Johannesburg Roads Agency wishes to state that it is aware of the damaged crash barrier and an inspector has been sent to site to ensure that safety precautions are implemented, whilst the process of procuring the barriers is finalised”.
Two weeks ago the barrier was finally repaired, almost 10 months after the barrier was damaged.
Burnett said he is happy pedestrians are now safe, despite the long wait.
Modiba went on to explain that “JRA endeavours to address road-related maintenance issues as effectively as possible.”
