Project Hope recently launched an initiative aimed at giving the young children of Zandspruit early childhood education.
Most of these children are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their parents are not working and cannot afford to pay crèche fees.
While the project is providing these children with imperative education, the project is also keeping them off the streets by creating a safe and fun environment in which to play and learn.
The project was officially launched on 10 October and runs from Emthonjeni Community Centre.
Project coordinator Refilwe Maseko explained, “I felt that these children were not learning anything by roaming the streets. Safety was also an issue because there are speeding cars and you would find the children walking and playing [on the street] without adult supervision”.
Children from disadvantaged families were identified and their parents were approached to allow their children to be part of Project Hope.
“We are trying to give them the same experience other children have at crèches,” said Maseko. Children involved in the project rang between the ages of two and six and are taught how to read and write; they are given meals and provided with a safe environment to play at no cost to their parents.
The initiative is in need of financial assistance and donations. Things needed include children’s chairs and tables and stationery. Volunteers are encouraged to read with the children.
