Kalmer second in Spar Women’s Challenge
Last year's winner, Northside's Rene Kalmer place second in this year's Spar Women's Challeng with her sister Christine placing seventh.
Thousands flocked to the Wanderers Club in Illovo for the 2013 Johannesburg Spar Women’s Challenge on 13 October.
Ethiopia’s Gezashigh Hunduma Gemeda won the 10km race in a time of 33.49 minutes. Second position was taken by Northsider’s Rene Kalmer in 34.31 minutes followed seconds later by Rutendo Nyahora from Zimbabwe in 35 minutes.
Kalmer said she had an awesome race. “It feels good to be running injury-free again, and I was feeling very good. I didn’t know what to expect from Gezashigh, because I haven’t run against her before, but I tried my very best and I am pleased with the way I ran,” she said. “I feel I am back in the swing of things, and I am looking forward to next year. It is slightly bittersweet to lose to a foreigner running in my own club colours, but it is always good to test yourself against world class runners.”
The race began at 8am and took the runners along Corlett Drive, Oxford Road and as far as Killarney before zig-zagging back to Wanderers.
Mapaseka Makhanya, who finished in 13th position, came into the race having collected the most points in the Grand Prix, which consisted of five challenge races. She walked away with a Nissan Micra for her achievement.
