The rent-a-plot plot

Former ANC councillor allegedly rules Princess with iron fist.

A case of pointing a firearm has been opened at the Roodepoort Police Station against former ANC Councillor Alfred Mudau.

This comes amidst persistent rumours and allegations.

According to a ward committee member (name withheld for security reasons) Mudau, who is an employee of Joburg Property Company (JPC), allegedly is running a racket by which he rents out plots and stands on the council-owned land on which Princess informal settlement is based. Mudau allegedly allocates stands and houses in and around the settlement and his henchmen collect the rent and intimidate those who do not want to play ball.

On 16 September, when the ward committee member and some unhappy residents went to one of the plots that is being ‘rented’, they came across a man being beaten because he allegedly did not go through Mudau to obtain the property. Another resident told the Record that he too had been threatened but was standing his ground and staying on.

Not long after, Mudau arrived and a scuffle between him and a man erupted. The ward committee member and other residents ran away but Mudau followed the ward committee member in his car. After catching up with him, Mudau allegedly drew a firearm, pointed it at him and told him that “you are next, I am going to kill you”.

According to the ward committee member Mudau’s reign of terror has been going on for a substantial amount of time.

Current councillor (DA) for the ward, Gert Niemand told the Record that Mudau indeed illegally occupies Plot 228 in Princess. On investigation it seemed that electricity to the property was connected to a substation across the property illegally.

“Whenever there is trouble in Princess, Mudau’s name usually pops up. I have made a case of intimidation against him in the time that I have been councillor,” says Niemand.

The Record approached JPC but they declined to comment on Mudau’s “personal affairs”. JPC did ask though for as much information as possible regarding the addresses of the council-owned plots that are being rented out illegally.

When Mudau was approached for comment he declined vehemently before the Record had a chance to explain the allegations against him.
