City Parks leaves wall destroyed

Tenant afraid to leave unsecured property

A property owner in Roodekrans is furious after the back wall of his property was destroyed when City Parks removed a blue gum tree in Wilgerood Road.

On 7 September, City Parks worked hard in removing large, obtrusive blue gum trees in Roodekrans. When they began felling the tree in question, the truck, which was meant to safely pull the tree away from the property on Azalea Avenue – which runs perpendicular to Wilgerood Road – stalled and this caused the tree to fall back, destroying the back wall of the property.

City parks then told the property owner to collect three different quotes for the repair of the wall, after which they would log the claim with Alexander Forbes.

“Why is it our responsibility to get the quotes?” asked property owner Johan Le Roux. “We got quotes anyway, but it’s been a month and to date, City Parks have not contacted us to let us know when the wall, plus the electric fencing, will be fixed.”

Sharon Petzer, the tenant renting the house on the property, says she is too scared to leave the house. “Anyone can come into the yard now; there is a huge, gaping entrance straight from Wilgerood Road.”

City Parks have been contacted regarding the matter and stated the matter has been escalated to the responsible parties and that the claim is being processed at present.
