A green ribbon tied around a tree is not something you see every day, but Monday 30 September was not an ordinary day. An environmental initiative took place at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens at the Nestle Environmental Centre, and pupils, teachers and TV stars Zizo Beda and Connie Ferguson were there to show their support.
The concept behind tying green ribbons around the trees at the Walter Sisulu Gardens and around school entrances is to raise environmental awareness and to remind pupils to “take care” and “take control”. The initiative was part of the Garnier Take Care Programme.
“Caring comes from a part of us that is more than body or mind. It’s a heart and soul connection. People want to do something for others but don’t always know what or how”, said Teresa Mordoh, Garnier SA business director. “To make it easy for them, we’ve partnered with our local brand ambassadors and various organisations to provide opportunities for public participation in our Take Care initiatives.”
An educational environmental talk was held for pupils informing them of the importance of biodiversity. Three pillars were emphasised: take care of yourself; of others; and of the environment.
Gift bags were distributed, frozen-yogurt dished out and green Garnier t-shirts given away. It was a spectacular day and everyone got involved and contributed to the green initiative.
