A large group of tennis players were crowned champs in seven categories as the annual Florida Park Tennis Club Championships came to a close on Saturday 7 September.
The men’s singles final is probably the most talked about match when Hugo le Roux bt Robert Cowley 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in a three hour long contest.
The Florida Park Tennic Club Championships is a tournament which was first played way back in 1960. It is played annually. This year, players have been going at each other on the courts for a spot in that final since early August.
Kevin Woodiwiss, tournament organiser, “The annual club championships is always a highlight in the clubs calendar, it was especially well attended this year with plenty of people coming to support the players and enjoy the spring weather.
“The mens singles final between Robert Cowley and Hugo le Roux was a marathon match which kept the crowd well entertained for well over three hours”.
The various champions are:
1. Men’s singles: Hugo le Roux bt Robert Cowley 6-4, 6-7, 7-6
2. Women’s singles: Elsa Struwig bt Danielle Brown 6-4, 6-2
3. Men’s doubles: Gerrie Kruger and Richard Frasier bt Marco Peterson and Kevin Woodiwiss 6-4, 6-7, 7-5
4. Women’s doubles: Elsa Struwig and Sue Malcolm bt Danielle Brown and Audrey Olivier 6-2, 6-2
5. Handicap men’s singles: Ruben Scheepers bt Christo Kruger 9-4
6. Handicap women’s singles: Elsa Struwig bt Bianca Coetzee 9-6
7. Mixed Doubles: Elsa Struwig/ Christo Kruger bt Dennis Brown/ Audrey Olivier 6-4 5-7 7-5
