Horizon View chool an eyesore
Residents are fed up with the litter and waste outside a school in Horizon View.
A concerned resident (although not a parent of any pupil at the school) is disgusted with the general view she has from her house near Horizon View Primary School.
She approached the Record with her complaint about general litter, illegal dumping and street vendors outside the school, and asked the Record to investigate.
The resident says that she used to jog up and down Galpin and Schultz Streets in this peaceful, usually neat residential area but she cannot stand the filth anymore.
“I have spoken to the school and they refuse to do something about it. I don’t know if it is a municipal issue but I do know that it is an absolute eyesore.”
Upon investigation it was found that general litter as well as natural waste (branches, leaves), wine boxes, beer bottles and old placards are strewn next to the double fence on Galpin Street where parents usually park to pick up their children after school. Approaching the main gates, more litter could be seen inside the school premises. Two street vendors were noted outside the school gate, selling candy and other snacks.
Speaking to the parents who were outside the school at approximately 1.30pm on Monday 9 September, the Record aimed to ascertain whether the street vending is a concern to them.
“It is a concern to me because ample snacks are sold at the school’s tuck shop,” said an admittedly under involved parent, who says she has not approached the school about it.
“Of course it is a concern! My first question to the school would be whether they aware that these vendors might be selling more than just snacks,” a concerned resident of Florida says, refering to a related incident at another school.
“Official tuck shops exist so that children can stay within the school parameters while getting something to eat, and this becomes even more concerning when you realise that these are primary school children and not supposedly more sensible teenagers [sic].”
Although the principal of Horizon View Primary School was not available for comment, the Record spoke to Jenny Moodley, the City Parks spokesperson. She says she was not aware of the situation but promised her soonest written response to the Record.
