Toastmasters West Rand Club met in Roodepoort on 5 September.
Three speakers, Nikki Quinn, Nathi Nala and Max Kaan gave speeches, and all speakers differed greatly. Quinn told a motivational story about how to make a difference, Nala recalled a humorous past experience and Kaan discussed the dangers of surveys.
Their speeches were informative yet funny, and the evening progressed with more humour – on cards.
Volunteers were given yellow cards on which random words like “sick”, “egg”, “orange” and “nasty” were written. With this word as a prompt, participants had to deliver an impromptu speech no longer than two minutes.
Although the evening was filled with laughter, things turned serious when speeches were evaluated.
Judges looked at grammar, hand gestures and the use of the word “um”.
The best-prepared speaker of the evening was Nathi Nala, while Max Kaan won for the best impromptu speech.
Gawie Beukman won the award for best evaluator, Mra Nyo received the tongue-in-cheek “um” award and emcee Lebo Sebogodi won the award for the best contributor to the evening.
Toastmasters is open to the public and the next meeting is on 18 September at MTN on 14th Avenue.
