The Zandspruit septic tank the Northcliff Rotary Club cleaned and repaired is now complete, the club’s Ansie Hibberd said.
Hibberd has been monitoring the process. “It is done and functioning properly again. No more sewage running all over. This a project that I have been wanting to do for 18 months because this informal settlement has a growing water need.”
The Northcliff Rotary Club has appointed Calcamite Sanitary Services as the service provider to the Zandspruit Emthonjeni Water and Sanitation Project. Emthonjeni Community Centre was established over 10 years ago to work alongside the local community with the aim of meeting the physical, medical, employment, educational, and social needs of the community. This initiative will help improve the lives of the more than 70 000 people residing in the informal settlement of Zandspruit.
“We wanted to solve the existing sewage problem. Now we just want to make it attractive by adding gravel and garden stone. We also want to put benches there.”
The project’s final phase will be to create a food garden in order to feed the Zandspruit residents. “This will also enhance the centre because garden training and education in terms of vegetable gardens and water supply will follow.”
