Hogging the limelight for Cansa
Harley Davidson decides to ride for and donate to Cansa on Spring Day.
“Ride safe and have fun”, the Harley Owners Group (Hog) Clearwater Chapter’s motto, was taken very seriously when they hosted a mass ride in aid of Cansa on Sunday 1 September.
On Sunday a group of Harley Davidson bikers gathered at Broadacres Shopping Centre near Fourways, from where they departed at 8.30am in a mass ride to Harley Davidson Clearwater to raise awareness about cancer. Members of different Hog Chapters joined in and after riding south on Christiaan de Wet Road they turned into the Harley Davidson Clearwater dealership premises around 9.15am. Hog chapters Pretoria, Zambezi, Gold Rand, Rustenburg and Johannesburg joined in the excitement.
At the dealership all sorts of refreshments were sold and there were a Cansa stall and Cansa mobile care centres. Ronél Vermaak, Cansa West Rand regional and relationship manager, explained to the Record that certain pins and badges were sponsored and that all profits made from the sales at the event would go to Cansa.
The Record caught up with Neville van Niekerk, Hog Clearwater Chapter director.
“The Harley Owners Group (Hog) always donates the funds raised through our events to an organisation of some sort.
“We decided that we want to benefit one school, one retirement village and one charity organisation during 2013, and the charity of choice was Cansa.”
Van Niekerk said that many of his Chapter’s members have been affected by cancer.
“We wanted to support Cansa because they do remarkable work in cancer awareness and research – and they have a local office.
“They were over the moon when we approached them about it.
“Often you will find bikers and biking associations being stereotyped negatively, but here we promote a safe, responsible and fun lifestyle.
“This is a non-political, family-oriented community of bikers and we’re happy to help the greater West Rand community by way of our events and the funds raised by hosting them.”
According to Van Niekerk the profits made from the Hog gathering as well as a portion of the sales made at the dealership on Sunday will benefit Cansa.
“The dealership has not calculated its portion yet, but the Hog gathering alone raised in excess of R20 000 for Cansa,” Van Niekerk told the Record on Monday 2 September.
