The local Round Table club, Roodepoort 162, in conjunction with Clearwater Mall and in association with CMS promotions, hosted the fourth Trolley Race on 18 August.
“The main idea of the race was to pay for a shopping trolley at a cost of only R500 per trolley,” explained Round Table’s Danie Odendaal.
A trolley is manned by four people: the pilot (who sits in the trolley) and three runners that push the trolley through a course in the parking lots of Clearwater Mall.
“The trolley fee buys the branding rights on the trolley and racers can brand or decorate it with anything they see fit,” said Odendaal. Some advertise, some decorate their trolley with an interesting theme, while others take the opportunity to serve two local charity organisations.
“The important thing is that racers are helping local residents who need it,” said Odendaal. The two beneficiaries for the charity race this year were the Gateway Society and Matla A bana.
The Gateway Society is an organisation that strives to provide the highest level of personal care and growth opportunities to intellectually and physically challenged people, while Matla A bana is a voice against child abuse.
Registration and trolley decoration began at 6.30am in Clearwater Mall’s parking area. At 7.30am the starter horn sounded the start of the race.
The race’s prizes were sponsored by Clearwater Mall for the first three places, as well as the best decorated trolley, and of course, best team spirit.
The winners of the prizes were:
- 1st – A CMS promotions-sponsored trolley manned by runners from Maragon School
- 2nd – Horizon Karate Centre Team 1
- 3rd – Maragon School
- Best Decorated Trolley – Monument Toyota Constantia Parts division
- Best Team Spirit – Horizon Karate Club
The total amout raised for the event was R12 000.
