Greek is known to be a difficult language, and pupils taking Greek at Maragon Private School in Ruimsig would agree.

These independent Greek classes take place on the school’s premises and Maragon pupils from Greek and Cypriot families have been attending Greek classes for 16 months.

When most Maragon pupils start their weekend, pupils in the Greek class find themselves in the capable hands of teacher Daisy Ndonados.

Ndonados has been teaching Greek for 38 years and she has a BA in Philosophy. While writing down names, she overhears a pupil saying that there are 26 letters in the Greek alphabet. Looking up from her writing, she interrupts the conversation, “24”‘.

Even parents can take lessons, and Helga Tsoumbris is one of them.  “I need to because I am married to a Greek man and I still struggle with the language, especially when I am in South Africa. When I am in Greece I do recognise sounds and so forth. There are no silent letters like the ‘k’ in ‘knife’ in English. Greek every letter is pronounced.”
