Flooding on Albertina Sisulu

A pipe burst on Albertina Sisulu (Main Reef) Road, causing havoc.

While contractors are hard at work trying to sort out electricity issues on Albertina Sisulu Road (previously Main Reef Road) they have to contend with water gushing like a fountain.

On the afternoon of Monday 5 August at around 2.15pm a water pipe burst, according to eyewitnesses.

“A water pipe had burst moments ago and it’s causing havoc,” contractor Corné Herbst told the Record, looking at the gushing water down the road.

“We were contracted recently to sort out the power supply to the businesses in the area,” Herbst said, pointing out his crew at work along the road. Businesses have been complaining about their lack of power for the past few months, both to the Record and to the officials involved.

The workers could be seen on the side of Albertina Sisulu Road, digging holes for new electricity connections, each one dangerously close to the surging water.

“Apparently, Joburg Water is on its way to turn off the water supply.”

Onlookers and residents of the Princess informal settlement seemed confused, and trucks and other vehicles had no choice but to drive through the water. Some people stopped in business driveways to figure out an alternative route.

No one could confirm what time Joburg Water technicians would arrive.

Herbst said that his team was working on the power box of a church on Albertina Sisulu Road and that they would work their way down the road as soon as it’s clear.
