Dewethenasia — Ah-hum. (Plenty clearing of the throats and singing Disney songs out loud while using your fingers to plug both your ears.)

Goeie genade. My little boeghoe-addled breintjie knew that the run-up to the election was going to be highly entertaining but this is outdoing my highest expectations. And we haven’t even gone nasionaal yet.

So having the day off at my own koerant, Die Veldbrand, I go and visit some of my colleagues at the Record and even they admit that things are becoming surreal. Seg daai bles reportertjie to his editor that it can only be here that a politician actually phones the paper to tell them about his court appearance! Now the fat is in the fire. The outjies from the ANC say Dewes is lying while Dewes blames them for politicising the affair. Meanwhile someone did or didn’t get klapped and everyone’s acting holier than thou. Regardless, dis groot sports and if this is an indication of what’s to come then we can pack our picnic mandjies and cancel our satellite TV subscriptions.

Which brings me to my next point. I was really deurmekaar as to who to vote for next year but I made up my mind. (No, do’nt worry, I am not going to promote any specific party.) The most entertaining party will get my vote and so far locally it’s a draw between Dave ‘Donnerbos’ Dewes’ DA and the bra comrades of Florida’s ANC. I think next time the newspaper has space to fill they maybe can publish a collage of Dewes’ greatest hits (literally!) and misses. Call it something like “50 shades of Dave”. (Ok that wasn’t my idea but a bloody good one nonetheless). If, and this is starting to look like a big if, he runs again next year maybe he must make his campaign slogan “Vote Dave Dewes – If only for sheer entertainment value”.

Yes readers, their pets and all lawyers out there in this dreary rat race, it seems like politics is still the best entertainment as long as you do not take it seriously. (Talking ’bout the rat race, a very wise Rabbi commented the other day that you must remember that even if you are number one in the rat race you are still a rat. Some nice advice for politicians there.)

And to end off. My “SA Law Enforcement Stupid People Shouldn’t Breed Award” goes to the SAPS for having 1 448 members with criminal records. As Arnold Geerts used to say “Fêntêstiek Naas, Fêntestiek”.

Anyway, until next week. I am off to make some popcorn and watch the idiots on A view from the House (SABC Parliamentary programme).
