Pet and Bird Farm: Any pup will do
Glenn Hatfield, owner of the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm, explains consigned puppies.
Following previous reports and specifically a report on puppies being kept in horrid conditions, Glenn Hatfield, owner of the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm enlightened the Record.
Hatfield explained that puppies “only come on consignment over weekends.
“Weekends are of our busiest times. Puppies come on consignment from the community itself – it’s a community service, really – and they are sold on behalf of residents.
“We take any puppy from any person given that the pup is healthy – these pups are checked properly before they’re accepted.”
Although Hatfield believes that some of the puppies they offer for sale are thoroughbred and from registered breeders, “the majority of them are crossbreeds … probably as many as 75 per cent”.
“Not all of them had their inoculations or were dewormed, but we establish this beforehand so that we can inform potential buyers.”
As for Gaynor Lawrence’s specific complaint as reported on previously, Hatfield says that the problem was taken care of “within half an hour of my knowledge of it”.
Lawrence never approached Hatfield with her complaint but spoke to his staff. Hatfield acknowledges that it was a particularly cold Saturday on which the puppies were left outside and that he instructed his staff to provide extra blankets and kennels for the puppies.
The Record previously reported that the SPCA vowed to work closely with the owner to improve conditions at the pet farm, to which Hatfield concurred.
“We also discussed building proper enclosures for our consigned puppies with both my staff and the SPCA.”
The plans have not been implemented yet, as Hatfield says that they have not decided on the location yet.
