Horizon View Primary fills Princess’ tummies

Pupils and educators provide soup and donate clothing for 67 minutes.

Pupils of Horizon View Primary spent their 67 minutes honouring the iconic Madiba by braving the cold and filling the tummies of those less fortunate.

In what was a joint effort between pupils, educators and councillors, residents of the Princess informal settlement were treated to some hot vegetable soup and fresh bread on Mandela Day.

When they arrived at the informal settlement, it was clear that many had just got out of bed with an empty stomach considering the number of residents who ran across the road eager to get their share.

“Soon, more arrived with their own mugs/ Tupperware. Some even returned after giving some soup to their little ones first,” an educator who was part of the initiative, Tammy Stradling said.

She added, “Along with collecting the vegetables for the soup, the school collected items of clothing that were snapped up quickly by the freezing residents.

“We were all so touched by this experience, making us realise how much we have to be thankful for and not forgetting the formidable inspiration behind this day,” Tammy said.

Horizon View Primary School calls on all West Randers to get involved in their community; and to those who haven’t given their 67 minutes yet, to give it today.

The school express their gratitude towards educator Mrs Swanepoel and her team for this very rewarding and enriching experience, and trust that a difference was made in the lives of the informal residents – even if only for a day.
