A colourful wall with all kinds of fairy tale characters and Disney Classic books await pupils at Laerskool Dr Havinga’s library.
This after the Educare Foundation created a reading corner on Mandela Day as part of their 67 minutes initiative.
Beverly Peters from the Educare Foundation says, “Havies is our second last school for which we have created such a reading corner.
“Our aim is to put fun back into reading, creating a reading corner that is colourful and has fairies, wild animals, puzzle mats, 3D wall stickers and Disney Classic books all around.”
Beverly adds that reading corners have been created at five other schools so far. They are Unified Public School, Roodepoort Primary, Jozua Naude, Horizon Primary, Toekomsrus Primary with Florida Park High being the last.
Havies principal Leon Visser referred to the reading corner as a form of reward, “Where pupils can go and relax, enjoy reading and be a child. Of course, they have to complete their homework first,” he said laughingly.
Pupils will have to wait another few days before they can start enjoying the school’s new asset.
The Educare Foundation aims to encourage literacy in communities in such a way that children enjoy reading.
Konica Minolta South Africa also sponsored most of the educational aids provided to Dr Havinga as part of their 67 minutes for Madiba.
