City and friends give more than 67 minutes
City coordinates massive event for Mandela Day.
The City of Johannesburg Region C team, various participants and sponsors set the example on Mandela Day when it came to their “67” minutes.
In an event that took up more than half the day, coordinated by the Citizen Relationship and Urban Management Department (Crumb) – which involved Garden World, Jody’s Tyres, Kloofendal NG Church, City Parks, Pikitup, JRA and Joburg Water – the non-government organisation (NGO) Tshepesang Programme for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children’s premises were given a make-over.
This NGO, which includes a crèche that caters for 27 children and food programme that caters for 320 school children – all from Princess informal settlement, was started by Susan Rammekwa. There is also a library and computer room and a bakery that helps financing the programme.
On the day JRA tarred the road and driveway leading into the premises while Garden World, Joburg Water and City Parks helped with the establishment of food gardens. Pikitup and City Parks took care of clearing the plot, while Jody’s Tyres refurbished all the playground toys with new tyres and paint work. Kloofendal NG Church supplied the organisation with food while council workers and Woolworths employees helped painting the inside of the building. As the day progressed, random neighbours also brought donations or lend a helping hand.
Councillors from across the political spectrum such as Willie van der Schyf (ANC) and Gert Niemand (DA) also visited.
The effort just showed once again what could be achieved if South Africans unite.
