South Road resident speaks up

South Road's recent electricity issues has resident concerned and frustrated.

As a person that resides in South Road in Lindaven, most residents of the street have been experiencing recurring power cuts throughout households since Saturday 6 July.

We are getting no help from the Johannesburg Metro Call Centre that keeps telling us their technician “are working on the problem”.

When I called the call centre on the night of Monday 8 July the operator told me that we should rather start toyi-toying since there are illegal connections on our supply line. This is rich, coming from her?

This problem had started some months ago when the transformer in our street got damaged with illegal connections of informal settlement ‘residents’ staying in a so-called temporary camp in our street.

The transformer has been replaced, only to have the problems resuming.

What is bothering me the most is that it is only affecting a portion of the street. My concern is that these interruptions happen at any time of the day without warning and, in the process, I am afraid that my electrical equipment will be damaged at somepoint.

Fortunately it is still cold so we have not experienced any food going off due to the problems.

I would really like to know, on behalf of my neighbours as well, what the real problem is and when we can expect it to be fixed.

This is daylight robbery because we are actually paying for services that are not rendered. It is the same story with our rubbish that is not being collected — where must we empty them?

Perhaps if we start illegally dumping our rubbish on the corner plot which is empty, then something will be done.
