On Thursday 11 July at noon, a robbery took place in a subway at the Roodepoort taxi rank.
Record intern Apiwe Mjambane watched as an elderly woman was being attacked by two unknown men inside the subway that leads to the other side of the rank where most taxis are.
Not too long after the attack, two other men approached Apiwe and aggressively demanded her to hand over her cellphone. They threatened her with a knife and made a run for it afterwards.
What was most terrifying was the reaction, or lack thereof, from the other people at the taxi rank. Nobody offered any assistance.
Regular commuters say that there used to be a light inside the subway that reduced criminal activities. But what will be the use of lighting if people just stand by watching as a criminals go about their business?
The robbers were chased only after Apiwe started screaming. Nobody called the police at the time of the incident.
Residents have been complaining about the subway, asking if the rank could not be moved to the other side.
One female also mentioned that she stopped taking taxis from the rank in Roodepoort because she was too afraid to go into the dark subway.
