“Do not support pet shops” — Cattanach
SPCA Manager believes the problem lies with the general mindset about pet shops.
In light of recent events and complaints about animal cruelty, SPCA Roodepoort Manager Mandy Cattanach has a message for residents.
“Do not support pet shops. Just don’t,” Cattanach stated boldly. Cattanach recently has been bombarded with questions and complaints about the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm and feels that it is up to the residents to help improve the situation.
“Everyone is expecting the SPCA to shut down pet shops that they have a problem with, but their mindset is wrong,” says Cattanach. According to her any SPCA needs to build a portfolio of problems with the pet shop and take it to court for serious cases, which is bound to be a lengthy procedure.
“You should not support any pet shop. There exists no need for a one in your area.
“Roodepoort has no shortage of animals. Take a look at how stocked local shelters are and decide for yourself.
“Stop supporting the owner of the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm that many residents have complained about.
“Do not sell livestock to these pet shop owners, and do not buy livestock from them.
“Do not even buy any accessories or foods from the pet shops you disagree with.
“If their business is no longer profitable, they will be forced to shut down.
“If you support a pet shop, you are supporting puppy and kitten trade.
“Rather find a registered breeder or support a local shelter and shut down the places that are of so much irritation to you.”
