Is JMPD above the law, more and more residents are asking.
The Record was visiting a source at his business in Roodepoort CBD, coincidently discussing this very question when a member of JMPD walked in. He asked for the service this business provides and while he waited he got comfy in the chair provided for waiting customers.
The Record‘s journalist got a hunch and grabbed his camera. Bingo. Right place, right time.
The JMPD vehicle was parked on a yellow line while the officer was going about his private business and not performing his official duties. (The officer was not from Region C but Region D.)
The officer realised what was taking place and rushed outside. He wanted to know why his car was being photographed. The JMPD member then frantically scrambled to move his vehicle. (Admission of guilt?)
He then reversed into a loading zone, which is still illegal because he neither was loading nor offloading goods.
Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident as on numerous occasions the Record had noticed JMPD members using their cellphones while driving.
The sad fact is that we live in a city where, for fear of victimisation by JMPD, the owner asked that not even his type of business should be identified – the very people who are supposed to protect him.
