The daughter of a newcomer (80) in Tornado Park Centre for the Aged contacted the Record with several complaints after only a month and a half of occupation.
The elderly woman (80) decided on a Tornado Park Centre unit on 22 May 2013. This was despite the several obvious issues with the unit – general filth, stained walls and ceiling issues.
The family of the elderly woman cleaned the unit and were in the process of having the unit painted when the Centre decided to replace the ceiling.
Her daughter had realised that there is no keypad for the unit’s prepaid electricity metre and duly notified the Centre of the matter. Nevertheless, the contract was signed on 23 May and the mother assumed occupation.
“What I can’t understand is how, a month and a half down the line, no one has assisted us in installing the missing keypad for the unit,” the daughter complained to the Record. Her complaints with the Centre had only led to appointments that weren’t kept.
“We cannot load any new electricity units for her, and have been dependent on what was left on the metre,” she explained.
The elderly resident (80) has been without electricity since Wednesday 26 June after all the remaining units were used.
“We have tried everything possible to get it sorted, but only heard empty promises.”
The Record attempted to contact the number listed for Tornado Park Centre but was referred to Johannesburg City Council for all complaints. After numerous phone calls were ended abruptly and more than 10 minutes were spent being transferred from one office to the next, it was explained eventually that all complaints for Tornado Park Centre should be directed to a certain Ethel Sereme.
Telephone numbers were given but they differed completely from official listings. However, no one answered those calls either.
The Record continues to investigate.
